If it is a matter of age of marriage, then the boy and the girl are the same, and the government is preparing for this. Yesterday, the cabinet got approval to increase the marriage age of girls from 18 to 21. Till now the age of girls was 18 years and that of boys was 21 years.

Recently, the Union Cabinet has passed a resolution to increase the age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years. This proposal is based on the recommendations that were submitted to NITI Aayog by the task force in December 2020.

This task force was constituted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in June 2020 under the chairmanship of Jaya Jaitley. The purpose of these recommendations is to empower women.

Why made this proposal?

Let us tell you that after the approval of the cabinet, the government will now have to amend the 'Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006'.

Apart from this, amendments will also be made in personal laws like 'Special Marriage Act 1954' and 'Hindu Marriage Act, 1955'.

Under Section 5(3) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, the minimum age of marriage is 18 years for a woman and 21 years for a man.

The Special Marriage Act, 1954, and the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006 also provided for the minimum age of marriage for women and men at 18 and 21 years respectively.

Let us tell you that according to the recently released NFHS-5 data, the child marriage rate in India has gone up to 23% in 2019-20.

However, this rate was 27% in 2015-16.
