Defining Freelancing and Affiliate Marketing

Before I start explaining you about these two terms in detail, let me clarify what each of these means:

Freelancing:

This involves offering your services directly to clients on a project basis. Think of writers, graphic designers, web developers, SEO experts, consultants and many more. As a freelancer, you set your rates, choose your clients, and manage your own time.

Affiliate Marketing:

This is all about promoting products or services that don’t belong to you. You earn a commission for every sale made through your referral link. As an affiliate marketer, your focus is on digital marketing strategies to drive traffic to these products.

  • Freelancing: When I first started freelancing, I charged just $5 to $10 per project (whose working hours were less than 2 or 3 hours). Over the years, I’ve increased my rates, and now I often charge upwards of $50 to $100 per hour for specialized projects. Your income is largely dependent on how many clients you can manage and the complexity of the work you take on.
  • Affiliate Marketing: The earning potential is limitless. In my affiliate journey, I’ve made anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand in a single month. Risk

  • Freelancing: The risk mainly lies in income consistency. When you’re reliant on clients, there can be dry spells. But the beauty of freelancing is that you can sometimes forecast your income based on recurring clients.
  • Affiliate Marketing: The risk mainly involves your marketing budget and the potential volatility in public interest in the products you promote. It can be a rollercoaster ride of income.

Freedom or Flexibility

  • Freelancing: While freelancers enjoy flexibility, those with high client loads may find it hard to maintain a work-life balance. I’ve had times when I worked on weekends to meet client deadlines.
  • Affiliate Marketing: Offers greater flexibility. You can work where you want and when you want, as long as you maintain your online presence and marketing strategies.
