History of Goa

The ancient name of Goa is also Gomantak, the history of Goa situated on the west coast of India is considered to be very ancient. It is said that once Lord Parashurama stood on the high peak of Sahyadri and shot an arrow towards the sea.

The history of Goa in the medieval period tells that Goa was ruled by many rulers in the past. Goa was a part of the Satavahana Empire in the first century BC.

In 1470 AD, Goa was established under the rule of Bahmani Sultans, after which Adilshah captured Goa. Adilshah's rule in Goa lasted till 1510 AD and after that Goa was occupied by the Portuguese and after independence, they were in possession till 1961.

The British left India on 15 August 1947 due to the sacrifices and efforts of many of our freedom fighters, but even after attaining independence, the Portuguese rule remained in Goa. Finally in 1961 Goa was liberated from Portuguese rule by the Indian Armed Forces through 'Operation Vijay'.
